CNN —From the “Walkie Talkie” skyscraper in London, to the Carrasco International Airport in Uruguay, New York-based firm Rafael Viñoly Architects’ portfolio consists of hundreds of projects spanning five continents. The latest addition, announced in January, will be a new international terminal at the Aeroporto Amerigo Vespucci in Florence, the capital of the Italian region of Tuscany. Rafael Viñoly Architects“In the summer, when you need to cool the interior of the space, you do heat exchange into that mass of earth,” he says. According to Viñoly, there are provisions in the design to produce a winery under the roof, though this is not confirmed. But he questions whether too much emphasis has been placed on the look of the vineyard, rather than its sustainable benefits.

How to Grow Old Like Isabella Rossellini

Scrolling through, I often wonder how Rossellini is so comfortable in her own skin at an age when many women struggle in theirs. Her father, the director Roberto Rossellini, was a giant of Italian cinema. In the film “La Chimera,” directed by the Italian filmmaker Alice Rohrwacher and opening in theaters on March 29, Rossellini plays a Tuscan matriarch who’s aging with a lot less equanimity than Isabella herself. Well, you know, I say you need two ingredients to open a farm: optimism and ignorance. And ignorance is how hard it is — how hard it is workwise, but also to make it financially viable.

More Americans are moving to Tuscany, a part of Italy known for medieval walled cities and wine. Some locals say it's keeping their economy alive, but others are starting to grumble. The influx of Americans, locals said, can be at once a booster of fortunes and an irritating imposition. "A lot of locals say that a place like Montepulciano cannot handle all those tourists because it's a small city," said Tudor, the jeweler. Americans, Ercolani said, "spend money and they appreciate the quality of the food and the wine that we have."

Try going for a stroll in much of Guatemala City: It is a pedestrian’s nightmare. Rifle-grasping guards squint at each passerby, sizing up potential assailants. But tucked within the chaotic capital’s crazy-quilt sprawl, there is a dreamlike haven where none of that exists. Nobody made this point better than the Tuscan humanist Poggio Bracciolini. Indeed, the rich merchants who were the main “victims” of forced loans were also the rulers of patrician republics and understood they were contributing their private resources to the public good. These loans proved to be a poor investment, as the interest tended to become negative in real terms because of hyperinflation. Of course, historically, wars provide the best possible motivation to ask citizens to contribute more: either with their blood or with their cash. For example, this was explicit in the fiscal package introduced in the United States as part of Franklin Roosevelt’s New Deal.

MPS gets dismissal of $481 mln in claims upheld in court

MILAN, Nov 9 (Reuters) - Milan's civil appeals court on Thursday upheld a ruling rejecting a 450 million euro ($481 million) damage claim brought by Luxembourg-based fund Alkem against Monte dei Paschi di Siena (BMPS.MI), the bank's former top management and its adviser Nomura , the court said in a statement. The rulings are beneficial for MPS which is 64% owned by the state following a 2017 bailout, and must be re-privatised. Alken had sought around 450 million euros in compensation and Virmont SA another 4.7 million, the court said, adding there were further smaller claims from some Italian investors. The civil appeals court in Milan also cited the ruling of the criminal court of appeal in Milan that had acquitted all the defendants in the case centring around the two derivatives deals, a decision confirmed by Italy's top court last month. Monte dei Paschi (MPS) is 64% owned by the state, which is working on reducing its stake in the Tuscan lender in line with re-privatisation commitments taken with the European Union. High-street banks in Italy have been able to keep at a minimum the portion of the increase in official rates they pass onto depositors. MPS said its core capital ratio had strengthened further in the quarter to 16.7%, above expectations and up from 15.9% at the end of June.

The government was expected to declare a state of emergency which would allow the rapid release of help for Tuscany. The governor of Tuscany said there were challenging issues around two large rivers in the area, the Bisenzio, north of Florence, and the Ombrone, in the southern part of the region. Oct 26 (Reuters) - This weekend's Serie A fixtures pit the last two Scudetto winners against each other, as defending champions Napoli host AC Milan on Sunday. Inter Milan were first to break Juve's stronghold in 2021, followed by their rivals Milan, before Napoli finally won their third Scudetto last season, and first without Diego Maradona. Now, those three sides, along with Juventus, are battling it out for this season's league title, and the Diego Armando Maradona stadium will see Napoli attempt to stay in the title race against Milan. Verona who won their opening two games, have picked up just two points in the seven games since then. Lazio have already lost four league games this season, but have now won their last two, taking them to 10th in the standings, and on Monday they host high-flying Fiorentina.

This Tuscan Red-Wine Bargain Is Better Than Ever
  + stars: | 2023-10-20 | by ( Lettie Teague | ) www.wsj.com   time to read: 1 min
WHY ARE less-acclaimed wines so often compared to their more-famous counterparts by means of a diminutive term? I’m thinking of Rosso di Montalcino, the red wine from Tuscany that’s often referred to as “baby Brunello.” Although Brunello di Montalcino and Rosso di Montalcino are made in the same place from the same grape, Brunello is considered one of the world’s best wines; Rosso, more of an also-ran. But is that fair, or even accurate? Talking with Brunello producers in the past several weeks, I found them just as focused on making a first-rate Rosso as a great Brunello. After tasting some 15 Rossos, I think many of those producers have succeeded in making Brunello-like wines that cost a lot less.

REUTERS / Jennifer Lorenzini/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsROME, Oct 20 (Reuters) - Italy's Treasury said on Friday it had picked UBS (UBSG.S) , Jefferies and Clifford Chance as financial and legal advisers for the privatisation of bailed-out bank Monte dei Paschi di Siena (MPS) (BMPS.MI). After a failed attempt to sell the Tuscan lender to larger peer UniCredit (CRDI.MI) in 2021, Italy agreed to Brussels' new privatisation terms that were never fully disclosed. However, Economy Minister Giancarlo Giorgetti said this week MPS could return to private hands by the end of next year. Both Giorgetti and Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni have said in recent months that the government would try to boost competition among Italy's banks with the privatisation of MPS.

As tourism returns to prepandemic levels across Italy, travelers itching to visit Florence face a delicate dilemma: how to experience the Tuscan capital’s Renaissance grandeur while remaining sensitive to the damage mass tourism inflicts. One solution is to travel outside of the high season, but even in the fall, visitors will face crowds at the Galleria dell’Accademia and at the Uffizi (especially if the latter reopens the long-shuttered Corridoio Vasariano to the public this year, as planned). Even better is to approach Florence not as a historical theme-park, but as a living city, by seeking out lesser-known pockets and new projects — from an ambitious cultural complex to a tiny trattoria run by passionate young Florentines — that will help sustain this city for years to come.

Reuters was first in May to report the Treasury was open to selling down its Monte dei Paschi (MPS) stake on the market if conditions were right.
